Hola… Apenas llegué al Perú, instalado en el Colegio San Agustín, a las pocas semanas ayudaba en la parroquia Nuestra Señora del Consuelo a celebrar la Eucaristía dominical de las 8.00 p.m. Como algo anecdótico te comento que dicha eucaristía de ese horario la he venido realizando, hasta la fecha, durante los últimos 40 años; 38 de éstos, domingo a domingo, y año tras año, me acompañaba en el coro el Dr. David Castrad, quien hace dos años partió a la Casa del Padre y dejó en mí un imborrable recuerdo de hombre sabio y bueno. Nunca le faltaron los detalles y siempre compartió la alegría de vivir y, sobre todo, en los momentos más difíciles de su vida, tuvo la hidalguía de salir hacia adelante con fe y dignidad.
“Hoy viene a mi recuerdo Don David porque muchas veces me contó esta historia:
Cuando yo era niño -me dijo- viví en la ciudad del Cusco con mi familia y en mi casa la música siempre estuvo presente. Aprendí a tocar piano entre otros muchos instrumentos que he logrado dominar a lo largo de mi vida. A mi hogar solía llegar un militar, cuyo nombre era Manuel; mis padres lo atendían con mucho cariño y en la sobremesa mi madre me invitaba a tocar el piano que teníamos en la sala para honrar a nuestro ilustre invitado. Pasaron los años y Manuel se convirtió en Presidente del Perú y yo en Profesor. Tuvimos la suerte de encontrarnos en un evento educativo y el General Odría me preguntó qué había sido de mi vida, recordándome que -para él- fue muy lindo la amistad que tuvo con mis padres y el imborrable recuerdo de aquel niño que tocaba piano cuando los visitaba en la casa. Después de una conversación de gratos recuerdos, el General me preguntó si necesitaba algo. Le dije que estaba agradecido de su amistad y que, realmente, nada me urgía. Como yo era Profesor le pedí, por favor, que tuviera en cuenta a los Maestros realzando un día al año para poder agradecerles el inmenso trabajo que tienen y desarrollan a lo largo de toda una tarea educativa. Me preguntó: -¿Qué día quisieras que fuera el Día del Maestro para honrarlo en el Perú? Le contesté: -El 6 de julio, día de mi cumpleaños. Y el General decretó al 6 de julio: “Día del Maestro”, conservándose todavía en estos tiempos”.
La historia nos habla que don José de San Martín fue quien fundó la primera escuela de varones en julio del año 1822 y también nos recuerda que fue en el gobierno de Manuel A. Odría el que finalmente oficializó, mediante Decreto Supremo del 4 de mayo de 1953, al 6 de julio como “Día del Maestro”.
